Why are sensory areas beneficial?
Having a sensory area provides autistic children and young people with a safe, supportive and calming space. This enables them to remain calm and focused, creating a better space for learning.
There are many Items or situations that could cause sensory overload. For many this can be bright lights, colourful displays, noisy clocks, talking. Providing autistic individuals with a sensory area will give them a space to feel calm, decompress, and regain focus.
The first step to creating a sensory corner is to look around the room and see what some autistic individuals may find overstimulating or overwhelming. These will be different for each individual
There are many items that you should consider including in a sensory corner. See below for links to useful sensory support tools and resources.
If you are unable to create a sensory corner, it would be useful to create a sensory toolkit. This can provide those who need support with regulation or who are overstimulated with a way to calm.
